(MAMA DON’T CRY)
Put a reggae singer from Jamaica, through a COVID-19 lockdown, add the race riots in America, surrounding the George Floyd incident, wrap that in a love for God and empathy, and what emerges is “Mama Don’t Cry”. “I see the tears in your eyes, so long you’ve been crying. Sons and daughters getting shot down in the streets dying. Memories of a strange fruit on the tree hanging, but t I want you to know, there’s a new day dawning”. In this song, Mydas gets personal with no apologies. At first, listen, one might be inclined to think it’s all about his, or someone’s mother, however, it won’t take long to realize, this song speaks to something deeper. Mydas exposes his personal and emotional connection with Mama Africa and black people’s struggle over centuries. “Mama Don’t Cry” is as inspirational as it is prophetic. It’s a timely gaze into the heart and mind of an artist who has spent years in search of his message and the appropriate delivery. This is it! It is evident that the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and racism are topics that Mydas feels compelled to address. No clearer can this be seen than in the lyrics of the much anticipated and ever so relevant “Mama Don’t Cry”. This mixture of ingredients feels right. The blend of infectious reggae, drum and bass, melodic piano, and guitars, along with Mydas’ compelling vocals, leaves no room for doubt. Take one listen and you just know that it works. If this song is anything to go by, we are in for a treat with his return.
